Meet with the IVF physician and staff who will discuss the medical aspects of becoming an egg donor with you, perform a physical exam, prescribe hormonal birth control and draw your blood for testing. You may be tested for hormone levels, infectious diseases, genetic diseases as well as drugs and nicotine. You must take precautions to remain free from sexually transmitted diseases at all times during your enrollment.
We will arrange an independent legal representation for you. An attorney familiar with egg donation will cover all points in the legal agreements you will be signing and ensure you feel knowledgeable about the information.
A cycle calendar will be provided to you with important dates and prescription medications. Some of these medications will be administered orally and/or by injection. The cycle calendar of medications is a 3 weeks treatment. The physician’s office will go over in detail the names of the medications, instructions on use, and side effects if any.
During this time, you will be assigned approximately six to seven morning appointments at the fertility center’s IVF (in-vitro fertilization) unit for the purpose of monitoring your progress on the medication and determining if your ovaries are stimulating properly. You must reliably communicate with the nursing staff and your case manager the entire time you are on the medication.
As the date of the retrieval approaches, you will be seen for pelvic ultrasound and blood work almost daily starting approximately 1 week prior to the egg retrieval. These appointments are very short in nature and are scheduled early in the morning as to not disrupt your work or school schedule.
On the day of the egg retrieval, you will be administered a light sedative by IV and the eggs will be retrieved vaginally by an ultrasound guided needle. Actual procedure takes about 20 minutes. After an adequate period of recovery, you will be released from the doctor’s office to go home for the remainder of your recovery. It is not uncommon to have some mild menstrual type cramping following the procedure. You will be able to return to your normal activities the following day.
